How to Make Positive Financial Decisions

Pause. Notice.Choose.

The decision that cost me $10,000

Last winter, I made a bad decision. I was in a panic about some healthcare decisions and made a rushed decision that may have been good for my health but not my pocketbook. I beat myself up for months about it and wish I could turn back time.

But I can't.

You may have had such an experience or can relate.

Financial stress comes in different forms and for different reasons.

  • We can have lots of money or no money and still worry about or regret a decision.

  • We can avoid money conversations or transactions because we fear losing money or believe others will take advantage of us.

  • We can be impulsive.

How to make positive financial decisions.

The following is a simple strategy for making positive financial decisions with clarity and confidence.

Pause. Notice. Choose.

Pause.

Positive Money begins with the end in mind — a positive relationship with money that fosters a rich life. Wherever you start or end up, the principles, process, and practice of Positive Money are designed to help you make decisions that feel good and lead to positive results. This is why the process of Positive Money starts with pausing for at least six seconds to give your rational brain a chance to process your feelings and access your thoughts. Notice.

While in this pause, take note of how you feel in your body. If you feel anxious, pressed, or defensive, take some deep breaths, walk around, or do whatever it takes to get back to a calmer state. This is where you can identify and communicate a boundary like, "I'm not feeling comfortable right now and need 10 minutes."

Choose.

When ready, scan the list of Positive Money principles and choose one that resonates, or ask a generative or positive question like, “What matters most right now?”

When using this practice consistently, you WILL see benefits not just in your financial life, but in life in general.
